god works

i was going to say in mysterious ways, but that's just too limiting ... i'm in the process of getting ready to leave for new mexico in just a few hours (a trip towards which i've been looking forward for months and months, but that has recently become a source of great stress) and i can feel my anxiety building (this is really nothing new - there's a lot to be done when you're trying to go out of town for 5 days). i finally got around to packing my bible and i found this inside -

so much to be grateful and thankful for:
peace
grace
understanding
salvation
each day
love
friendships
"teachable" moments

most importantly that you loved me enough to die for me and to love me unconditionally.

each day is a new beginning and i'm thankful that you encourage me to live life to its fullest, not to dwell on regret and to have the understanding that i'm precious to you and there's nothing, together, we can't do. you have made me more than a conqueror and it's plainly evident to me.

i have no idea when or why i wrote this, but it's exactly what i needed to read today. god works ...

celebrating the small things

sometimes i think that i don't take the time to remember the small victories in life - the times that i smile when i feel like i haven't really been able to smile in such a long time, the times that i'm able to just "be," the times that i really embrace that this is the day that the lord has made and i will rejoice and be glad in it.

so tonight i take the time to publicly celebrate the small things!!

and it comes with its own mandatory form

last week i was in need of some glue. nothing fancy - just plain old white school glue. i went into our supply closet at work and found this ...

looks like plain old white school glue, huh? and it is. but, since this plain old white sticky substance was packaged for the federal government it is called ...

adhesive, polyvinyl, acetate emulsion general purpose CID A-A-1270

and it's intended use is not just to "stick things together." no, that would be too simple. this emulsion ...

corresponds to class "A" of MMM-A-180. it is for general purpose bonding of paper, fabrics and wood, but not for use on photos, bare metal or joints subjected to heat, soaking or high stress

think i'm kidding? here's a picture of the label ...

worried that you might go a little crazy and glue your fingers together? no worries. call 1-800-424-9300 - the EMERGENCY number listed on the label!! (i can't get them to come and fix my network connection, but the GLUE has an emergency number??!!?!?!? who am i kidding? i LOVE this place!)

party like it's 1993

you all know that i've been sucked in by the lesbian entertainment that is otalia on guiding light. the story line is pretty good and actually believable (although they did profess their love for each other over a month ago and have not yet shared a kiss - whereas REAL lesbians would have already moved in and adopted their first cat together). and you all know that guiding light has been canceled. now there was talk of gl getting picked up by another network or otalia moving to another soap. but, then came word today that ...

CARLY'S COMING BACK TO DAYS OF OUR LIVES

so otalia's done, but while the others cry a river, i'm about to cue up my vcr, start skipping class, lounge in the lazy boy from 1 to 2 pm and party like it's 1993!

arlington: the rap

check this out - it's seriously funny

diving through

i was talking to my therapist a few weeks back and she asked me these two questions -

1) what would you do if someone was standing in front of you and it became quite obvious that they were going to hurl a large rock at your head?

i quickly responded that i would duck. it seemed to be an acceptable answer because she nodded and asked me the next question ...

2) what would you do if you were standing on the edge of the shore and a huge wave was about to break?

without hesitation, i replied "i would duck." she looked perplexed and started to quiz me - "you'd duck? what does that mean? you wouldn't run away to protect yourself?"

"nah," i said. "i'd duck under and come out the other side. diving through a really big wave is an incredibly exhilarating feeling. it sort of whips your body up and then you feel the water rushing over your face as you rocket through."

she was still a little befuddled.

i told her that i might get knocked back, maybe even get scraped up, but i was confident that i would get back up to duck under the next one.

at the end of our exchange, she told me that i had my answer.

nothing says "good fortune" like honey drenched pastry

tonight i was listening to a woman (who would prove to be quite unfamiliar with all things jewish) tell a story about two people who had recently married. she said that the bride was from a christian tradition and the groom from a jewish tradition. she went on to say that the groom was particularly pleased that the service included elements of both traditions. for example, she concluded, at the end of the ceremony he got to step on a glass and yell ... BAKLAVA!

(those of us listening stared at each other dumbfounded and someone finally asked - "do you mean "mazel tov?")

they're bringing in supports

looks like the handful of openly gay residents of ward 8 are bringing in back up! yesterday, a coalition of more than 100 clergy from all faith backgrounds converged on a welcoming baptist church in deep southeast, in the heart of ward 8, to declare their support for full marriage rights for all district of columbia residents. interestingly, while the mayor for life and his ordained supporters predicted impending civil war, this group of men and women religious sounded much more christlike, declaring -

recognizing that there is heartfelt disagreement on this issue, we call on all people of the district of columbia to engage in respectful and loving dialogue on marriage equality

who would you want to follow?
