nothing says "good fortune" like honey drenched pastry

tonight i was listening to a woman (who would prove to be quite unfamiliar with all things jewish) tell a story about two people who had recently married. she said that the bride was from a christian tradition and the groom from a jewish tradition. she went on to say that the groom was particularly pleased that the service included elements of both traditions. for example, she concluded, at the end of the ceremony he got to step on a glass and yell ... BAKLAVA!

(those of us listening stared at each other dumbfounded and someone finally asked - "do you mean "mazel tov?")
